A Clear, Actionable Plan Customized for Your Horse
Brianna starts all new clients off with an evaluation that may take up to two hours. During the evaluation, Brianna will discuss important background details with the horse owner and will watch the horse go under saddle or on the lunge line.
From there, Brianna will determine if the horse is a good candidate for any therapeutic modalities, such as myofasical release massage, k-taping, redlight therapy, or equi-bands and will perform those services if she feels the horse will benefit from it.
After the initial evaluation, she will develop a custom Action Plan, which may include a fitness or rehab program. Follow up sessions may be scheduled as needed.
After the Initial Evaluation, Follow Up Sessions may be scheduled as needed or as recommended.
Follow Up Sessions will differ per horse, and are completely customized to fit the specific level of support each horse needs. These sessions may include additional gait and muscle evaluations to track progress, adjustments to the Action Plan, and a variety of therapeutic modalities.
Set your horse up for success with our comprehensive, full service full board package. We determine rehab boarding packages on a case by case basis as each horse requires different needs.
Much like humans, horses tend to develop very tight, tense spots throughout their bodies, forming muscle knots and tension pulling on their skeleton. This can be caused by a multitude of things such as compensation in a gait, muscle atrophy, or even unbalanced hooves! Myofascial massage can help!! After the horse has undergone a physical evaluation to determine the tensest spots, local pressure is applied with different techniques to help decompress the tissue. With the pressure applied to the soft tissue, it allows for a rapid increase in blood flow to the area which brings oxygen back to the area, allowing the tense muscles and fascia to get proper nutrients for recovery, causing the tension to release.
Specific Benefits:
Often when horses are sore, tense, or have tight muscles they require a muscle relaxer, maybe even steroid injections, or something more invasive. Myofascial massage is a great, non-invasive, way to quickly bring oxygenated blood flow to the area to start the process of healing. Some horses respond unpleased to a traditional massage because it is known for manipulating the soft tissue, which if they are sore, can be extremely uncomfortable. Myofascial massage works by simply applying any amount of pressure that is determined by the horse to release the soft tissue tension, rather than manipulating it into a release. Not only that, but nothing gets physically put into the horse, but rather the horses use their nutrients and blood flow to heal. Most importantly, a horse can have myofasical massage done whether they are in minimal work or full work, old or young. There are hardly any pre-qualifying requirements.
Kinesiology taping is a great, non-invasive tool that, depending on how it is applied, can help improve so many struggles the horse may be facing. Tape works by lifting the skin, activating proprioceptors, creating a new feeling for the horse, while also helping to draw proper blood flow, to send messages to muscles to either relax, activate, or even just offer support. Applying tape is fairly seamless! Tape is recommended to stay on for 7-10 days unless the body allows it to release sooner. Oftentimes, once the tape has done its job, it loses its strength and shape, based on the swelling releasing, etc, and falls off on its own.
Specific Benefits:
Ever worry that once your horse has bodywork or a procedure done they will have a lag time in returning to work? Not the case with the tape! In fact, the horse can and is encouraged to work with the tape on for most applications! The tape is extremely non-invasive and causes no pain to the horse at all, oftentimes just causing the horse a long-term sense of relaxation by keeping the muscles relaxed, joints supported, and blood flowing without having to over-medicate or supplement. Once the tape has been removed, it can even be reapplied again 2-3 days later, once the skin has had time to breathe.
More often than not, we as riders, struggle to get horses to properly lift their belly, work over their back, and engage from behind, forming correct self-carriage. As a result, horses get really sucked back, form back injuries, may start tripping, or just become extremely heavy on the hands of their riders. The fact of the matter is, horses are much bigger and stronger than humans, and we will never be able to physically lift a horse to teach them self carriage and to get off the forehand. However, this can all be changed with the Equi-Band System! Equi-Band is, in short, resistance bands for horses! They work strictly off of proprioception by placing one under the tummy as a girth-like feature and one behind the hind legs as a tail strap-like feature. The idea is that the horse would feel the band and start to lift their tummy, leading them over their back or engaging the hind legs under themselves leading to self-carriage. This system is great for kissing spine cases where horses need to re-learn to strengthen their abs and carry themselves, teaching young horses about coming over their back into self-carriage, or even for the master horses that want to work on the lunge, but want it to be a valuable session. Before each band is placed on the horse, a physical evaluation will be completed, as well as an in-depth discussion of goals and the overall health of the horse to create the proper, safe, successful work plan.
Specific Benefits:
The greatest benefit is that this system can be used both under tack, on the lunge line, or even in hand/in the stall. The system is individually measured to each horse allowing it to shrink or enlarge based on the size of the horse and the level of training they have reached. There is no one size fits all with this system. Additionally, the system works off of the horse’s own response and power. There will be no more fighting with the horse or pulling them one way or another, or option for them to even become heavy and fight themselves, like in a pessoa system, because they are being encouraged to work over their own muscles, at their own pace, to form a comfortable, correct outline with minimal room for resistance.
Redlight therapy is becoming quite popular for its non-invasive, yet prompt healing properties. When applied, the redlight sends signals to the cells, whether they be bone, soft tissue, etc to increase the cell’s energy, which allows the cell to wake up and regain function after the damage that has been caused to them, increasing the rate of healing. The application is fairly simple, holding the light to the area that is determined based on the severity of damaged cells and location.
Specific Benefits:
When your horse is injured, you always want the fastest, most seamless way to recover. Here we have it! By increasing the cell’s level of function, the process in which bone, wounds, tears, or strains heal is rapidly increased. Not only that, but nothing is being put into your horse’s body or left on their body long term so they have much more availability to live their normal, comfortable life without a single hassle to either of you. This is a great additional therapy to taping, antibiotics for healing open wounds, or support wraps for healing fractures.
New clients must start by setting up an Initial Evaluation. Prepare by being ready to discuss your specific issues, goals, etc. and have your horse groomed.
If your horse needs a custom Action Plan (determined after the Initial Evaluation), you will receive it via email within three days of your Evaluation.
Follow-Up Sessions may be scheduled as-needed or as recommended for existing clients.
Yes! Although many injured horses benefit, these services are also great for keeping muscles healthy to prevent injury!
Frequently Asked Questions
Even if your horse is not hurt, their body and muscles still need support to stay healthy and remain uninjured. We can work on conditioning, finding stretches to incorporate, relieving any imbalances in the gait that may eventually lead to an issue, relieve any soreness or tension and so much more!
No! I love working with all horses!
This is truly case dependent, but I usually recommend a one-two week interval for the first few visits.
There is no waiting time! That is the best part!
This is case dependent, but oftentimes once the injury is healed, you can decide if you want your horse to continue the service for proper health maintenance or terminate the services.
Of course! At this time, we travel up to one hour for barn visits.
I am only certified, educated, and insured to work on horses at this time, although I have seen so many of these services offered to humans (including myself) with equal success.
I have done a lot and am still learning! I went to Johnson and Wales University for undergrad, as well as grad school, Animal Rehab Institute for my rehab certification, Equi-Tape for my taping certification, and there are more certifications currently in the works!
